A unique, deep, rich voice, paired with great skill and passion - Krassen Karagiozov is one of the most gifted baritones of our time.

Krassen Karagiozov, former member of the San José Opera, is a real specialist when it comes to Verdi, but also nails roles in Puccini operas, such as Shaunard, Gianni Schicchi or Sharpless. The artist, who works and lives in the United States, has been successfully performing around the world, lately at the Verdi Festival in Parma, as well as in Plovdiv in his native Bulgaria (Rigoletto). He will be returning to Parma for his role debut of Amonasro.

Praised for his “mellow, burnished, beautiful (San Jose Mercury News) and strong voice (New York Times) and referred to as “the most commanding singer on stage” (SF Classical Voice), Bulgarian baritone Krassen Karagiozov, has thrilled audiences in concert and on the opera stage with music that spans the classical-modern eras.

Krassen will return to the Teatro Regio di Parma for a role debut of Amonasro in 2019/20. He already performed there in Macbeth and in a well-received recital of selected Verdi arias.

Born in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, Krassen Karagiozov trained in the State Conservatory as both a concert pianist and singer and spent his weekends in the wings of the State Opera house, watching the stars that preceded him. With his “wide range of textures, booming resonance contrasted with suave legato lines” (San Francisco Classical Voice), and deep immersion into the history and traditions of instrumental and vocal classical music, Krassen Karagiozov offers a complex and riveting performance both in music and drama.
Upon finishing his time as Principal Resident Artist at Opera San Jose under the guidance of the late Ms. Irene Dalis, Karagiozov has since performed in symphonic halls and opera theaters all over America and internationally. Karagiozov’s 2016/2017 season sawi him coming back home to make his debut with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra (Bulgaria), in a nationally broadcasted Gala Concert celebrating Bulgarian opera singers, where he sang his most cherished bel canto, Verdi and Russian repertoire. Karagiozov returned to the West Bay Opera (Palo Alto, CA) with M° Jose-Luis Moscovich to sing a "suitably brash and robust" (SF Chronicle) Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro and enjoyed creating his first portrayal of Michele in Il Tabarro from Puccini's Trittico. The following season Krassen made his debut as Pizzaro in Beethoven's Fidelio and sang Escamillo once again with " precision and appropriate force, and a commanding presence on the stage (PaloAlto Weekly)."

In the previous seasons, Krassen Karagiozov was seen as Rigoletto, Conte di Luna, Enrico and Germont, Eugene Onegin, Sgt. Belcore, Guglielmo, Escamillo Marcello, Vallentin, Figaro, Papageno, Sharpless, Vronsky, Count Almaviva, Dandini, Don Giovanni, Tarquinius, Silvio, Schaunard, Lescaut, Masetto, Gianni Schicchi, Harlequin, and Peter.

Belcore, Guglielmo, Escamillo Marcello, Vallentin, Figaro, Papageno, Sharpless, Vronsky, Graf Almaviva, Dandini, Don Giovanni, Tarquinius, Silvio, Schaunard, Lescaut, Masetto, Gianni Schicchi, Harlekin und Peter.
