Biography

sergeY kovnir, bass

Already when Sergey Kovnir won the first Prize and the Golden Medal at the International Voice Competition „Boris Hmyra“ in the historical National Philharmonic of Ukraine in Kiew, both Jury and audience were aware that an immense talent had been brought to light. Some years before this, he had already been awarded important prizes and even in Moscow he was a laureate at the Galina Vishnevskaya Voice Competition.

When Andrea Breth, director of the new production of Tschaikowski’s Eugen Onegin at the Salzburg Festival was casting the role of the Captain, the young Ukrainian bass Kovnir overwhelmed her with his height and his impressive appearance. Daniel Barenboim, conductor of the production, was keen of his voice and so Kovnir’s path to the major opera stage had been liberated.

In 2018 Sergey interpretes all main bass roles at the prestigious Shalyapin Festival (Zaccaria, Pimen, Timur, Sparafucile, Ferrando) and in 2018/19 he debuts at Teatro San Carlo in Naples by singing Zaccaria (Nabucco) first and then Dikoj (Katja Kabanova).

Sergey Kovnir built his vast bass-repertoire as a member of the Ukrainian National Opera, furthermore he had invitations to the theatres in Riga and St. Petersburg. Concert engagements lead him amongst others to the Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall, where he performed Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.

Thanks to his great voice technique and his great stage presence Kovnir, a graduate of the famous Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Kiew (Prof. Eugenia Miroshnichenko), is among the most important singers of our time.

Biografia

SERGEY KOVNIR. BASSO

Konzertengagements führten ihn u.a. mit Beethoven’s 9.
